Quick Bites: Lazy Sloth

I’mma start a new thing called Quick Bites, which would be mini entries about casual places we visit, places where you don’t have to save up, wait for a special occasion or whatever. Just walk in and, ideally, enjoy!

The first Quick Bites is gonna be about Lazy Sloth.

Lazy Sloth is a little cafe along East Coast Road, essentially opposite Katong V/Village Hotel Katong. I couldn’t find any online presence so I don’t know much about their story. To us, it was a random eatery.

What caught our attention was that they served things like beef stew so we decided to try it out.

They had a promotion on a Halloween cocktail ($10) which comprised cognac, lemon juice, ginger beer and lemongrass. One the (out)side were red sugar crystals with a bit of grenadine. I found the drink to be a bit sour and I needed the sugar for it to be okay for me, but I’m also very sensitive to sourness and don’t like it. Liner said it was like a typical party drink and it was cloyingly sweet for him.

Liner had the beef stew ($18) since he loves beef stews. It tasted just like how you’d expect. It wasn’t too acidic/sour and wasn’t too thick. The beef pieces were ‘fork tender’ with a little bit of bite. The mash was good but could’ve used more butter according to Liner. Overall it was a good dish, not like something someone just smashed out..

I had duck confit ($26). It seemed pan fried in a way that made the skin crispy like really fried. The meat was so tender - it fell right off the bone. The flavour was good albeit a little salty. The skin actually added to the dish in that it tasted great and the fat just melted in our mouths, with a little bit of crisp. The mash and gravy were also good. We would definitely come back for this dish.

Duck confit is not something that, in my opinion, is done too well in most places. Thus far I have only considered Saveur’s duck confit good. But! Lazy Sloth’s duck confit beats Saveur’s for sure.

Due to the way Covid has affected multitudes of F&B businesses, they weren’t serving desserts. We look forward to one day seeing their full menu and trying other things (along with that duck confit). #supportlocal!

Overall it was a pretty positive experience. Honestly, it was unexpected. As for costs, it was reasonable in my opinion and in our bill they only added 10% service charge, not GST. Cool.
